Two thousand years of history are brought fascinatingly to
life in a lovely rural setting on the A10 six miles north of Cambridge. The
stone-built farmhouse at the heart of the site is actually the remains of a
12th century Benedictine Abbey which at different times was home to Benedictine
monks, the Knights Templar and nuns of the Franciscan order, the Poor Clares.
The superb Norman interior has been beautifully preserved and restored, and
visitors can see the nuns' refectory.
On the same site, and run by English Heritage
as a joint attraction, is the Farmland Museum.
Old farm buildings have been splendidly renovated and converted to tell visitors
about the rural history of Cambridgeshire from early days to modern times. The
museum is ideal for family visits, with specially designed activities for
children, and among the top displays are a village shop, agricultural machinery
and a magnificent 17th century stone barn. The Museum is open from noon to 5pm
April to October.
