A brickworks has stood on the site of Bulmer Brick &
Tile Co Ltd since the 15th century. Today it is a family business run by Peter
Minter and his two sons, Tony and David. Peter's father Lawrence moved to
Bulmer in 1936 when looking to start a business of his own, having trained and
worked for many years for F.G.Minters, a large and successful building firm in London.
The Second World War came soon afterwards, and many of the
staff were called up for military service. Peter's early knowledge came from
the older men too old for call up. This, in years to come, proved invaluable
when, after Laurie's death in 1974, Peter was asked to speak at a conference
that was looking at the heritage of the trade for the first time. It became
clear that people had lost many of the old skills, skills that Bulmer Brick
still used and took for granted. Peter began re-learning old techniques, and
remembering what the old craftsmen had said.
Today, almost all the production is made to order.
Responding to the needs of buildings country wide, exploiting the wonderful
natural resource of London bed clay that matches so well buildings such as
Hampton Court Palace and the exciting development of St Pancras Station, or the
old windmill at Moulton, standing close by The Wash. A collection of some 5,000
moulds, many over 100 years old, adds to the continuity of brick, terracotta,
tiles and red rubbers that are the hallmark of Bulmer.
