Liz and Steve Harris have been interested in bird art ever
since they bought a painting of geese over Norfolk mud-flats in 1974. They have
lived overlooking the marshes at Salthouse for over 25 years. Liz was a teacher
and Steve worked in wildlife and landscape conservation. They opened the BIRDscapes
Gallery in October 2005. Wild birds and wild places are the main themes,
although pure landscapes and other wildlife are included. BIRDscapes displays
works by many of the leading bird artists working in Britain today, as well as
landscapes with a local flavour. Original paintings and prints are the
mainstay, but sculptures, reproductions, wildlife art books and cards are also
available.
The pine-clad exhibition area is spacious, well lit and
welcoming, with chairs to encourage an unhurried visit in a warm, relaxed
atmosphere. Monthly exhibitions are held, with featured artists, and mixed
shows that display the talents of the Gallery's many regular contributors. The
gallery has `green' aspirations, and in conjunction with the UK's largest
binocular and telescope shop, Cley Spy in Glandford, manages an adjacent six
acres as a `Farmland Bird Reserve'. The yard marks the start of a three-mile
bird walk that explores the lovely Bayfield Estate and its varied birdlife.
