Owner Matthew Higham, Manager Julia Headland and a fine team
of experts run Matthew Higham Antiques, which has over 20 years' experience of
sourcing and importing rare and interesting European pine and hardwood
furniture, mainly from France, Hungary, Romania, Russia and the Czech Republic.
Each month around 250 pieces, including armoires, food cupboards, dressers,
bookcases, benches, tables, boxes and chests of drawers arrive at their UK
warehouse, where a team of specialised cabinet-makers and painters will paint
or customise items to individual customer requirements. The company is renowned
for the skill and taste it employs in reviving the grace and integrity of each
piece through specially developed restoration processes; since each item will enjoy
a special place in any home, the experts will modify furniture and develop
paint colours to suit a wide range of interiors, from classic homes to modern
urban spaces.
A new range of Chinese antique furniture represents styles
and forms from almost every province in China. Restoration carried out in
Beijing is very sympathetic to the original surface patina of each piece, so
re-lacquering is largely rejected in favour of reconditioning the crackled and
worn finishes. Prices at Matthew Higham Antiques cover a wide range, and
customers include interior designers, quality antique and interiors outlets,
dealers and the trade in the UK and around the world, as well as private
