The Antiques Warehouse, Merchants of Antiques
and Makers of Fine Furniture, is located by the A12 at Marlesford, a short drive northeast of
Woodbridge. Owners John and Lesley Ball run the business, which has been making
furniture and buying and selling antiques since 1989. Both are totally involved
in the day-to-day affairs of the Warehouse, and their different but
complementary tastes in antiques ensure that the stock covers an exceptionally
wide and interesting range. Between them, they do all the buying, and John
travels extensively at least twice a year to source items; they only buy pieces
they like and `can live with'.
The floors of display space contain an amazing variety of
pieces small and large, old and new. There's every conceivable item of
furniture, from footstools and side tables to bureaux, chests, cupboards and
bedroom and dining suites. In two large workshops they make an impressive range
of furniture from a variety of woods, including oak, cherry, mahogany and pine,
and in a variety of finishes. Traditional designs can be copied or modified to
suit individual requirements, and John's background in antiques ensures that
those designs always feature strongly. The range of furniture on display
extends to the garden, with a selection of stylish tables and chairs, gazebos
and structures in painted steel, urns, planters and fountains. Furniture is by
no means all that the Warehouse stocks, and other well-chosen pieces include
silver and porcelain, mirrors, ceiling and centre lights, lanterns and rugs.
John and Lesley are very knowledgeable and very approachable, and visitors are
encouraged to browse at leisure, and to touch and examine any item.
Interested customers can access a particularly informative
website that provides pictures and descriptions of many of the items in stock,
but nothing can beat a visit in person to this outstanding enterprise. Opening
hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4.30pm on Sundays and Bank
Holidays. The friendly approach has enabled the owners to build a large and
loyal customer base, and anyone who visits the Warehouse can be sure of a warm
welcome not just from the owners and staff but also from their popular
five-year-old rescue dog Barnes Wallace (BaBa for short). Why Barnes Wallace?
Well, he's very bouncy, and he goes down a bomb with everyone who meets him!
