One of East Anglia's leading contemporary art galleries,
Buckenham Galleries, offers a wide variety of paintings, ceramics, jewellery,
glass work and sculpture. Situated on the High Street, the gallery is housed in
one of the oldest buildings in Southwold. Richard Buckenham, after whom the
house was named, was a Tudor merchant who almost certainly had the house built.
Grade II listed, the Georgian fronted house retains some of its original Tudor
features, such as the beams in one of the downstairs rooms, and Tudor brickwork
on the walls of the cellar which has now been transformed into a warm and
inviting coffee house.
After various uses, including as a vicarage, a gentleman's
club and offices, Buckenham House was opened as a gallery in the summer of
1999. Situated on two floors, there are several galleries, each taking the name
of a previous owner of the building. The spacious well lit rooms, with white
walls, black wooden flooring and high ceilings, provide an ideal space for
exhibiting art.
Buckenham Galleries have an on-going exhibition of works by
Gallery Artists. In conjunction with this, there are eight major exhibitions a
year where specially selected artists are invited to show their works in the
upstairs rooms. With a wealth of different styles on offer, there is always
something new to see.
Over the years, Buckenham Galleries has built up a
first-class reputation with artists and collectors alike. Offering a relaxed
and friendly atmosphere, the gallery is open every day 10am-5pm, including Bank
Holidays. |
