Delicatessens of outstanding range and quality are places to be treasured, and the citizens of Southwold are lucky indeed to have one of the best in the Black Olive Delicatessen. A magnet for food-lovers not just in Southwold but for many miles around, the Black Olive is located in the busy High Street of this marvellous town. Tracy Brown took over the premises in 2005; she knows that the people in this part of the world appreciate the good things in life, and her shop fully lives up to the promise of the sign above the entrance that offers `a Taste of the World'.

As the name suggests, olives are here in abundance, with at least seven varieties ready to scoop: plain black or green, pitted or stuffed with garlic, almonds and sun-dried tomatoes. There are marinated mushrooms and artichokes, a tub of succulent beans, peppers stuffed with feta cheese, basil-marinated sardines, anchovies plain, with chilli, with olives (banderillas), dressed crabs, shell-on prawns, potted shrimps, lobster, scampi, cockles, mussels, samphire. Tracy's partner Sam is a fish merchant, and he provides some of the superb fish and shellfish served at the deli.

One of the cool cabinets displays a vast range of cold and cured meats, salamis and sausages, and the 40+ cheeses represent England, Wales, France, Italy, Spain, Greece and Switzerland.

There's freshly baked bread, locally made cakes and pastries, jams and preserves, pickles and chutneys (many of theses also from local producers), vinegars and oils (customers can fill their own containers with olive oil from a tap), and fruit juices, including orange juice freshly pressed to order. Tracy and her staff are happy to make up individual orders for lunches, dinners, picnics, special occasions and Christmas hampers.

Sandwiches are custom-made to order with almost any filling you can think of, and coffee comes to buy as beans, ground or in a cup to take away.

That should be enough to get the taste buds tingling, but the Black Olive Delicatessen has much, much more. Only a visit will bring the whole amazing range to life - step inside, smell the wonderful aromas, see the cornucopia of superb food, and you might decide that you never need to cook again.
