The Hundred House Hotel takes its name from the
ancient divisions of shires into `hundreds'. The oldest part of
the building is a 14th century thatched courthouse. Opposite
the hotel are the remains of the old stocks and whipping
post used for dispensing quick justice. The main hotel is
Georgian, and the interior boasts old quarry-tiled floors,
exposed brickwork, beamed ceilings and oak panelling. Celebrating
21 years under family ownership, the Phillips' have made
some new improvements to ensure your experience remains up
to date, whilst retaining the friendly welcoming atmosphere, which marries
hospitality, eccentricity, warmth and wit in an
irresistible combination.
The ten guest bedrooms are furnished with antique or period furniture and
adorned with herbs and plants. Some have
half-tester or four-poster beds, the sheets are
lavender-scented and the superior rooms have the unique attraction of velvet-covered swings.
The herb/plant theme continues into the restaurant and bars, with drying
herbs, flowers and gourds. Chef/Patron Stuart, the younger son produces great meals
on brasserie and restaurant menus that combine classic skills with many innovative
touches, as well as making use of over 100 sorts
of herbs that grow in the garden. Typical choices on both their Bar/Brasserie menu
and the Restaurant menu run from griddled scallops with a red pepper coulis for
starters, to their "soon to be famous" steak
and kidney pie with home made pastry, home-made sausages, traditional ploughmans
with local cheeses, fresh fish of the day and vegetarians can enjoy selections
including roast mushrooms with lentil Dahl served
with chick pea salad and courgettes. Traditional roasts are served between 12 and 7pm on Sundays.
A door opposite the bar leads to a path marked Lovers Walk and grounds laid out to
show the changing colours of the seasons. The gardens are the creation of Sylvia, who travelled
the land with her husband Henry to find the stones, artefacts and plants that grace
this extraordinary garden. The hotel has a lovely old tithe barn that's an ideal venue for
meetings, conferences or special occasions. The Hundred House is also fully licensed for Civil Ceremonies.
