Surie and Andrew Goldstraw have turned an
early-18th century farmhouse and gardens by the Caldon Canal
into one of the most interesting places to visit in the
region. The most unusual attraction at Fine Feathers
is the unique collection of home-bred animals, from goats, pigs,
sheep, racoons, cats and dogs (Rottweilers and Alaskan
Snow Dogs) to exotic birds, ostriches, emus, waterfowl,
poultry and Koi carp. The owners are specialist breeders of
rare animals and also provide a unique animal rescue
service, and they organise regular tours of the farm.
The farm shop on the site sells high-quality
meat, exotic meat and game, home-made pies and cakes,
dairy produce, vegetables, pickles and preserves, arts
and crafts and boating supplies. Visitors can enjoy many
of the shop's superb produce in home-cooked dishes, including an all-day breakfast, served in
the little restaurant. Canal cruises on the Caldon Canal can be booked from here in high season,
and narrow-boat moorings are available. Fine Feathers is open from 8 to 6 seven days a week.
