Just down the hill from the ruins of a 15th
century castle, Ballinalacken Castle Country House
was built by Lord O'Brien in 1840 as his family home. It
occupies a superb site commanding huge vistas that take in
the Atlantic, the Aran Islands, the Cliffs of Moher and
the Connemara hills.
Daniel O'Callaghan purchased it from the O'Briens in 1939 and the house has been in his
family ever since. It is currently owned by Denis O'Callaghan (Daniel's son) and managed by Marian
(Daniel's granddaughter). These friendly hosts pride themselves on
providing a warm welcome and personal attention to every guest. Their
hotel is well known for its excellent food, the creation of chef Frank
Sheedy (a son-in-law) who has won several awards for his
imaginative cuisine. Meals are served in the elegant, non-smoking dining
room overlooking the sea, every evening except Tuesday from 6.45pm
to 8.45pm. The accommodation here maintains the same
high standards evident throughout the hotel. There are 12
guest bedrooms, including two suites, four queen size doubles, and
six standard twin/doubles. All are unusually spacious, most enjoy
sea views, and all are provided with private facilities, direct
dial telephone and hair dryers.
