Castle Bernard, home of the Earl of Bandon, was destroyed by fire in 1921 and the
family adapted a terrace of three two-storeyed
cottages into a house suitable to its needs. Two of
these cottages are now available, as Castle
Bernard Cottages, for self-catering holidays. On one side they overlook the 18-hole
Bandon golf
course; on the other, they look into a walled garden. The larger of the
two cottages, which can accommodate up to eight guests, has
French windows opening to the terraced garden designed by Notcutts
which is planted out with a wide variety of shrubs, including some
unusual ones.
The smaller cottage, which accommodates four persons, opens
from its upper storey to its own lawn and trees. Guests are welcome to
wander around the extensive, though overgrown, pleasure gardens of
the ruined castle; take walks through the woods by the River Bandon;
fish for salmon temporary club membership is available play a
round of golf or a few sets of tennis for a moderate charge. In late May
the pleasure gardens are a delight a sea of bluebells with islands
of spectacular azaleas. Then in early June, the old rhododendrons
flower, covering house-sized bushes in a wide variety of colours.
