When he purchased the beautiful 470-acre Belle Isle Estate, the Duke of Abercorn resolved not to create a typical tourist destination but to simply convert and refurbish a number of listed buildings and existing cottages in a sensitive and caring manner. Above all he wanted to preserve the unique beauty and timeless atmosphere of this idyllic area which is nationally recognised as an Area of Special Scientific Interest.

The estate has been inhabited since the 12th century and is still a vibrant working estate with a fully functioning farm, including a fine herd of 90 dairy cows. Visitors have the choice of a wide range of self-catering accommodation anything from a castle to an apartment. Dating from the early 1600s, the castle stands at the heart of the estate and has been extensively yet sensitively refurbished to provide a full range of modern facilities that blends seamlessly with original period grandeur. Antique furniture and paintings by Victorian masters are all offset beautifully by the dramatic colour scheme created by the esteemed international interior designer, David Hicks. The eight bedrooms and seven bathrooms within the mansion can cater for up to 14 people in complete comfort and style.

For smaller parties, apartments originally built in 1860 and set around a spacious courtyard provide accommodation ranging from singles to those large enough for six people. Some are suitable for use by disabled visitors; one has a children's loft; each has its own character and style. All have earned a four-star rating from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Another option is the Coach House, more than 140 years old, which contains 2 substantial apartments sleeping four and each with its own fitted kitchen, dining area, living room and cosy log stove burner. All furnishings and finishes within the four-star apartments are in keeping with the fine period style of the building, and outside each is a pleasant patio area with picnic table and seats.

Also available is Bridge House, a fine, three-bedroomed house surrounded by woodlands and boasting a position right by the water's edge. The house has its own mooring for small boats and enjoys an unparalleled vantage point from which to fish or simply enjoy the lakeland views.

Finally, there's Glen Cottage, a charming traditional dwelling set within a wonderful country garden. The cottage has two bedrooms and a log-burning fire, and visitors enjoy direct access to excellent private fishing pegs.
