"The food laid before us was a marvel" was the
rapturous response of the Independent on
Sunday's food critic to the cuisine on offer at
An Portan Restaurant & Guesthouse in the seaside village of Dunquin.
Gourmets will relish the extensive menu that ranges from
wild boar to sirloin steak; from Cajun cod to monkfish
"perfection on a plate" according to another satisfied diner. As well as serving excellent food,
An Portan also offers comfortable accommodation in 14 good sized bedrooms, each with its own
front door. There's a single and double bed in each room, a shower en suite, TV, radio and tea/coffee
making facilities.
Situated well back from the road, the rooms are
quiet and peaceful. Visitors will find plenty to see and do
in the area. The ferry to Great Blasket Island is a short
walk away, there's golf, horse riding, fishing, swimming
and surfing all within easy reach. In the evening, enjoy
one of the traditional music sessions in the local pubs.
This rural area of Ireland is still predominantly
Irish-speaking and An Portan offers residential courses in the
language for beginners, improvers and more advanced
students. Full details can be found on An Portan's website.
