Duncannon Fort

Duncannon, New Ross, Co. Wexford

Tel: 051 389454

e-mail: duncannonfort@hotmail.com

Duncannon Fort is a star shaped fortress built on a strategically important promontory in Waterford Harbour. It was built in 1588 in expectation of an attack on the area by the Spanish Armada.

Most notable features of the Fort are the spectacular views over Waterford Estuary, down to Hook Head and across to Passage East, the dry moat and lighthouse, the croppy boy cell where rebels were imprisoned in 1798 and, this year, the newly opened Maritime Museum, charting the history of the most dangerous coastline in Ireland, the Wexford Coast. Cockleshell Art Centre, Artist's Studio, Café and Craft Shop.
