When Dianne and Chris Thurstans bought Pond Cottage in 1968, the 17th century farmworker's cottage was in a deplorable state. `It had no electricity, no heating, an outside loo and a tap outside the back door as the only water supply,' recalls Dianne. It took them 18 months to make the place habitable, and since then they have added extensions which have doubled its size. Today there are three spacious showrooms displaying an eclectic collection that specialises in country pine and kitchenalia but also offers bedroom, nursery, playroom and office furniture, tables and chairs, lamps, patchwork quilts, rocking horses, crockery sets and much, much more. One whole showroom is devoted to motoring memorabilia, an eye-catching array that ranges from Dinky toys to a full-size replica Bugatti, along with motoring-related advertisements, forecourt furniture, badges and signs. It's a delightful place to browse round and if you want to turn a visit into a short break, Dianne and Chris can offer you comfortable B&B accommodation in either a twin or a double room.
