Become an archaeological detective at The ARC. What was it really like living in Viking times? The Archaeological Resource Centre (ARC) is the educational resource centre associated with the renowned attraction, Jorvik. The ARC welcomes all visitors who are curious about York's Viking past, encouraging them to come and find out more about archaeology and what the city was like when our Viking ancestors inhabited it over 1,000 years ago.

Visitors are guided by an archaeologist and can actively participate in a range of activities. They can even explore a Viking's rubbish pit, handling 1,000-year-old bones, pottery, bits of shoe leather and beautifully carved antler hair combs. Also at The ARC, the `Sensory Detective Garden' helps everyone - including those with disabilities - interpret buildings of the past using interactive clues. The site also presents fragments of lost buildings excavated by the York Archaeological Trust.

Visitors can also see the ARC's special exhibition, based on the BBC TV series, Blood of the Vikings, which explores some of the secrets of skeletons found at an archaeological dig in Riccall outside York, and seeks to answer whether these were the defeated Viking armies of 1066.
