Everyone who appreciates the
intricate and beautiful designs of the Celtic tradition will
find Celtic Crafts, located appropriately enough on the
Holy Island, an absolute delight. Celtic Crafts and Sally's,
owned by Karen and Neil Mundy, are two charming shops housed
in one of the oldest buildings on Holy Island, dating back to
1666. Sally's, the original shop, is named after an Island
woman who opened her shop at the turn of the last century with
the help of donations from the Island women when her husband
died working at Glasgow docks. A hundred years on it is an
attractive outlet for Celtic craftwork, stocking designer
knitwear and glassware sourced from small Celtic workshops
throughout the British Isles.
There
is also a good range of books, postcards, clothing and Celtic
music. Next door, Celtic Crafts sells exquisite jewellery,
with one of the best range of Celtic engagement and wedding
rings in the country, available in gold, silver, platinum and
precious stones. Many of the pieces in the shop take
inspiration from the famous Lindisfarne Gospels, with some
items exclusive to Celtic Crafts, such as the St Cuthbert
Cross. For the `foodies' amongst customers Karen and Neil now
make and sell their own fudge. Flavours change on a weekly
basis and are available either direct from the shop or by
mail-order. This marvellous place also offers a holiday
apartment on the Island, with two spacious and attractive
bedrooms - see website or email for details.
