Owned by the Percy family since
1309, Alnwick is one of the finest castles in the
British Isles. Originally built to defend England's northern
border from the Scottish armies, the castle is the family home
of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. With magnificent
views over the River Aln and surrounding countryside, the
castle is a few minutes walk from the centre of the historic
market town of Alnwick.
Within the massive stone walls the
beautifully kept grounds contain fascinating exhibitions.
Discover the history of the Northumberland Fusiliers since
1674 in the Abbot's Tower. Marvel at the richness of
Northumberland's archaeological past in the Postern Tower and
listen to life as a member of the Percy Tenantry Volunteers
(1798-1814) in the Constable's Tower.
At the heart of the castle is the
keep. Pass through the medieval towers and enter a wonderful
family home. State Rooms, refurbished in the mid-19th century
by the Fourth Duke, contain paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck
and Titian. Finely carved wooden panels adorn the walls,
windows and ceilings. A quiz helps children learn about
Alnwick Castle.
There are various events held
throughout the spring and summer, including birds of prey
displays, horse driving trials and an International Music
Festival. Noted as a location for Harry Potter, Elizabeth
and Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, Alnwick Castle is
open daily from 1st April to 31st October.
