Located near to the town centre the museum displays important collections of natural history, archaeology, local history and fine and decorative art. There is also a large and varied temporary exhiibition programme throughout the year; details are available on request. The Regimental Museum of the Kings' Own Yorkshire Light Infantry is housed in the same building and includes one of the most extensive medal collections to be exhibited in any museum in this country.

There are no steps to the museum from the car park. A lift provides access to all the upper galleries. Toilets have facilities for people with disabilities and baby change.
