The Broughton Craft Shop provides the opportunity of discovering unique craftsman-made gifts in the heart of one of south Lakeland's most appealing market towns. Owner John Fletcher is a craftsman himself and only selects items with exceptional character, integrity and originality. He seeks out talented sculptors, potters and artists from all over the country and adds his own range of beautiful handmade Lakeslate jewellery. "Think of the colours and textures of the Lake District," he says, "and one of its most enduring is that of slate the beautiful grey-green rock which has been hewn for centuries."

Handworking different shades of slate from Elterwater, Kirkstone, Broughton and beyond, John creates the most delicate and beguiling jewellery. Some pieces remain elegantly simple and unadorned; others are decorated with delicate traceries of silver inlay which provide a bright contrast to the smooth darkness of the stone, and add a grace which brings true artistry to the extensive range of Lakeslate earrings, brooches and pendants. And if you have a special design in mind, John is happy to discuss individual commissions. The Craft Shop is open from 9.30am to 5.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday, but please phone if you are making a special journey.
