Occupying a superb position in the
beautiful Borrowdale valley overlooking Derwentwater, Ashness
Farm belonging to the National Trust is a working Lakeland
fell farm with its origins in the 16th century that also
offers comfortable accommodation. The farm specialises in the
rearing of some rare breeds, including its Swaledale and
Herdwick sheep and belted Galloway cattle. Tenants Anne and
Mark Cornthwaite also have Gloucester Old Spot pigs, Lakeland
fell ponies, goats and even a couple of llamas. "We
encourage our visitors," they say, "to come and
appreciate Cumbrian family farm life from close up, and to
share a little of what means so much to us."
Accommodation
comprises five en suite double rooms, two can be offered as
twin beds, all with central heating and a magnificent view
across Derwentwater. A traditional English farmhouse breakfast
is served in the recently refurbished dining room, alternative
breakfasts and special dietary needs can also be catered for,
evening meals are available by arrangement using their own
farm reared meat. You are invited to relax by the log fire in
the lounge which has its original oak beams. Anne and Mark
have produced a very helpful leaflet detailing various walks
exploring the glorious scenery all around them.
