The Johns family have been making sticky toffee puddings since 1984, first in their restaurant in Grange and from 1989 here in Cartmel Village Shop on the Square. In the small kitchen at the rear of the shop they made many of the dishes they had served in the restaurant but now produced them as take home products. As demand for Sticky Toffee Pudding increased, they gradually stopped making their other products. Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding Co. Ltd uses only the very best ingredients for this traditional Cumbrian pudding which has caused something of a storm nationwide enjoying press coverage in various national papers and TV, including the ultimate accolade of being celebrated as one of Rick Stein's Food Heroes. The shop also sells its own sticky toffee pudding sauce _ delicious with ice cream, barbecued bananas or baked apples _ as well as an extensive range of high quality comestibles from other producers.

If for some reason you can't make it to this charming little village, the puddings are available in individual delicatessens nationwide, as well as at Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Fortnum & Mason food halls, and even in Waitrose supermarkets. Requests for puddings to be sent to friends and relatives who have not yet enjoyed the experience of a sticky toffee pudding, or for repeat orders has ensured a continuous growth of the company's mail order side of the business which now covers a large part of Europe.

At the other end of Cartmel village, adjacent to the Priory gates, awaits a different kind of treasure chest. The vision for the recently opened Priory Shop was conceived and realised by the same talented family and their dedicated team of workers. The main inspiration of the shop is an exclusive range of original home decorations, from popular Selfridge's lines such as Gisella Graham and Sia; gifts with a gardening theme, luxury chocolates and ice cream, traditional confectionery, local Bath House toiletries and beautiful cards and wrapping paper.
