Four red sandstone cottages
surround a courtyard in tranquil, picturesque Gamblesby, a
village hidden away beneath the fells of the North Pennines
just one mile from the scenic A686 which links Penrith to
Northumberland via Alston. From Melmerby, where you leave the
main road to come to Gamblesby, the road climbs dramatically
up the fell to Hartside viewpoint 1,903 feet above sea level
with spectacular views over the Eden Valley to the mountains
of the Lake District National Park and southwest Scotland.
Herdwick Cottage was once the
farm's granary. It sleeps two in a double bedroom with en
suite bathroom, whilst Hawthorn Cottage sleeps two in a double
bedroom and also has a sofa bed. All the accommodation in
Hawthorn Cottage is on the ground floor. The original barn was
split into two cottages and The Barn sleeps four in one double
and one twin room downstairs. Upstairs is a very large open
plan living room/kitchen/diner with
vaulted
ceilings and original beams and views of the hills. The gable
end of The Barn is in the original red sandstone. Next door is
Helm Cottage with a king sized bed in a bedroom/lounge with an
en suite shower room upstairs. Down the spiral staircase is a
large kitchen/diner. All guests have shared use of the garden
and courtyard which have tables and benches. There are
excellent walks to the neighbouring village of Melmerby with
its famous organic Village Bakery, the Shepherd's Inn and the
village shop and wine cellar. Dogs welcome at no extra charge.
Short breaks starting either Friday or Monday are available
all year round.
