An ideal way to discover what the
island has to offer is by train. Supported by a good bus
network, you can be somewhere different each day exploring the
sights and the scenery. From Douglas, the Manx Electric
Railway takes you along the east coast to Laxey. Here you
can climb to the top of the Great Laxey Wheel and go
underground on the Mines Trail. Laxey is also the starting
point for the Snaefell Mountain Railway which climbs the
Island's highest peak. At the top you're rewarded with
breathtaking views and refreshments in the Summit Hotel Café.
Further on from Laxey is the
largest town in the north, Ramsey. In the town, there are
plenty of shops to see, cafés to enjoy and pubs to visit.
Nearby is Mooragh Park and boating lake. A short bus ride away
is The Gibbs of the Grove. This Victorian period house was
formerly the summer retreat of a Liverpool shipping merchant
and his family. Inside the house you will find original
furnishings, fittings and costumes. Outside in the spacious
grounds and gardens are displays of vintage vehicles and
agricultural equipment. The trains run daily between April and
October and there are various themed events during the year.
