Opened in the autumn of 2004, Makepiece
was the brainchild of knitwear designer Nicola Sherlock
and her
business
partner Beate Kubitz, both of whom wanted to establish a
business based on an ethical and aesthetic response to our
landscape and the desire for design with principles. These
principles include: "Buy as locally as possible _ we even
keep our own sheep"; pay people properly; look after
animals; and create real fashion, not passing fads. "We
all desire beautiful designs and lovely things," says
Nicola, "but don't really want to pay in environmental
damage, exploitation or pollution." She uses luxury yarns
from Makepiece's own flocks and from farms where she can be
sure that the land is sustained and people and animals are
treated fairly.
Each garment is meticulously
finished by hand to ensure it is perfect to wear and enjoy. As
Beate puts it: "Makepiece is both an ethic and an
aesthetic. We make clothes that are not just for the body,
they're for the soul." Nicola and Beate's enterprise
received a major accolade when it was selected by the Crafts
Council to exhibit at the prestigious New Designers showcase
exhibition in London in June 2005.
