The Riverside Restaurant was
established in 1991 by Richard Parkinson. Meals are served all
day, with only private functions in the evening. The food is
cooked to order using only the finest and freshest of local
produce to give you a superb eating experience. This is slow
food, not fast food, and yet the prices represent remarkable
value for money. The place is spacious and light, with high
walls and crisp linen on the tables. You can also dine in a
spectacular garden, full of daturas (brugmansia), lilies, a
banana plant, dahlias and gunnera which surround the tables in
summer. In winter there is a wood burning stove to keep you
cosy and warm as you eat with a small tropical jungle in the
corner. The River Whiteadder runs past the Riverside, and
fishing permits are available from the restaurant.
The
high walls are the perfect showcase for the Abbey Artifacts
Gallery, founded by Richard's wife Karen in 1997. Here she
displays original paintings, prints and drawings by local and
invited artists. The subject matter consists of landscapes,
wildlife, botanical art, dogs and farm animals. The media used
ranges from oils, watercolour, acrylic to charcoal. Karen also
sells creative woodturning, ceramics, printed textiles and
stick dressing. A full framing service is available. Several
times a year there are private exhibitions in the evening,
with great food and a guest artist. Private viewings by
appointment.
Abbey Artifacts Gallery and the
Riverside Restaurant are open Tuesday to Friday from 11am to
4pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Closed on Mondays. From
November to April times may vary so please phone. Booking
essential at weekends.
