Angel's Portion is situated
in what was the Old Parish Hall in Thornhill, deep in Nithdale.
It is one of the most historic buildings in the village, and
is an apt location for a special shop that offers a wide range
of designer-led goods that are just right for that special
souvenir or gift. The place is rich in colour, light and
texture, and there is sure to be something that catches your
eye. The owner, Dorothy Hill, personally searches the world
for the finest items to include in her eclectic stock. The shop
takes its name from the small amount of whisky that is lost
while the spirit is maturing in casks within bonded
warehouses. It's a mysterious process, and one that is aptly
named.
Glassware - houseware - prints -
tableware - cards - cookware - jewellery - ceramics -perfumes
- it has them all! Take your time when browsing round the
showroom. Most items are from an artistic background, and many
are hard to find elsewhere. Some are exclusive to the Angel's
Portion, which shows the shop's commitment to good design,
superb craftsmanship and value for money.
The
jewellery, for instance, encompasses the timeless beauty of
Corona Silver as well as the striking and colourful
hand-turned wooden beads of the internationally renowned local
craftswoman Denise Zygadlo. Plus, if it's pottery you're
after, the shop stocks two ranges of Stephen Pearce's renowned
earthenware - the classic `Traditional' in terracotta and
creamy white, and the striking 'Shanagarry' range in black and
white. The `Shanagarry' pieces are handmade and hand-decorated
at a pottery near Shanagarry in Ireland, and are as as
practical as they are beautiful.
Upstairs from the main shop is The
Gallery, featuring paintings, sculpture, furniture, casts.
etchings and other objet d'art from both local and national
artists and craftspersons. These represent the cream of good
design, and range from turned bowls by Glen Lucas to Sheryl
Brown's silver castings. You're sure to find something that
will inspire and captivate you.
And
while you're visiting Angels Portion why not relax and treat
yourself to a coffee or tea in the coffee shop? Or even a
fruit juice? There is also delicious home baking, and all food
items are available as a `carry out'.
Thornhill is a beautiful village,
and well worth exploring. You will notice, as you enter the
shop, a small bust of Thornhill's own writer - Jospeh Laing
Waugh. He wrote books in lowland Scots, and the people of the
village are justly proud of him.
Just as they are of the Angels
Portion. It's a wonderful shop, and entering it is an
adventure that you just can't miss. So if you're in beautiful
Nithsdale, be sure to call in.
