Asgard Crafts specialises
in wonderful reproductions of ancient Viking artefacts. Owned
and managed by Catriona and Jim Glazzard, the goods are
historically accurate, being manufactured using tools and
techniques researched from archaeological evidence. Jim has a
degree in archaeology, and is a Viking specialist, so all the
objects manufactured by him are completely authentic and in
keeping with Viking craftsmanship. So much so that some of the
artefacts made by him are on display at the Jorvik Viking
Centre in York. Jim has been making Viking objects since 2000,
and now he has opened up a shop and workshop, not only to sell
what he makes, but to spread a greater understanding of Viking
culture and life, which has been such a strong influence on
Scotland.
The
shop is a pleasant, timber built building (designed to be in
keeping with Viking architecture) situated within the Smithy
Heritage Centre, which is dedicated to local history. Here you
can see some exquisite objects, from combs made of antler to
Viking jewellery.
Behind the shop is the workshop,
where the objects are made. Here Jim can demonstrate the many
skills used by the Vikings in the making of such objects, and
can tell you something of the Vikings and their culture. It's
a fascinating place, and is sure to be one of the highlights
of your visit to the area.
