Situated in Mill of Forse, where
the rugged cliffs of south east Caithness sweep northwards, North
Shore Pottery and Patricia Niemann Jewellery offer
everyone the chance to purchase a gift or commission a piece,
which will remind them of their stay in Caithness.
The potter, Jenny Mackenzie Ross,
uses the landscapes of the countryside and rugged coast around
the far north as inspiration for her delicate yet sturdy pots.
She loves texture and form, and the "journey" of the
pot from the soft clay on the wheel to the kiln and on to the
shelf.
She also uses salt-glazes on her
pots and her source for the salt is invariably kelp (a form of
seaweed) found on the local shoreline. In this way, she imbues
the pot with salty qualities of the sea.
Jenny
shares the studio with Patricia, the goldsmith. Patricia makes
unusual pieces of fine jewellery, using gemstones, pearls and
other often unorthodox materials, like limpet sea shells or
found objects from the local beaches. Many of her unique
pieces have to do with the inspiring quality of the
environment in Caithness and often display a spark of humour.
She also offers to redesign and remake her customers' loved
old jewellery. Some blown glass pieces are shown as well in
the studio, along with other changing exhibitions. You can
watch Jenny work as she delicately throws a pot and Patricia
when she makes jewellery on her workbench.
