Almost 2km long, CairnGorm's funicular railway is the highest railway in the United Kingdom and takes you up the slopes of CairnGorm, the UK's fifth highest mountain at 1245metres and one of Scotland's most extreme arctic wilderness environments, valued for its landscape and rare habitats. Travelling up the wind scoured slopes gives a close up view of the northern Cairngorms, created and moulded by over 400 million years of geological drama while, rising above, CairnGorm itself provides a majestic backdrop. Down in the valley below, in Glen More, the panorama is no less dramatic with the ancient Caledonian pine forest and Loch Mortich creating a gentler landscape setting. The CairnGorm Mountain Experience provides an unrivalled opportunity for visitors of all ages and physical ability to relax and enjoy one of Britain's most spectacular mountain areas in safety and comfort.

Nestled just below the summit of CairnGorm the brand new Ptarmigan Station offers spectacular views and is home to the Mountain Exhibition. The story of how the mountains have evolved and how wildlife has adapted to survive in such extreme conditions, climate change, folklore and the human impact on the mountain landscape are all explored. Visitors who want to explore the mountain on foot are encouraged to make use of two, specially created, clearly marked footpaths within the ski area boundary. Both paths start from the railway Base Station. Along each route you'll find information points highlighting topics of interest.

The highest shop in the land features an interesting range of gifts to buy and the highest restaurant, with its viewing terrace, offers a menu of wholesome traditional local ingredients. The railway and restaurant are available for private functions - phone for details.
