For beautifully crafted jewellery
in sterling silver make your way to Creagagan Gorm on the
beautiful island of Lewis in the Western Isles. Here you will
find the workshop and showroom of Ian Stewart-Hargreaves,
who uses traditional methods (though he will admit to having
an electric drill and a gas burner) when crafting his
exquisite pieces.
His
specialities are traditional penannular brooches and kilt
pins. Though these would have originally been made from
polished bone, horn or antler, Ian considers silver to be far
more aesthetically pleasing and practical for today's
circumstances. He also hand crafts necklaces, earrings, wrist
guards, hair slides and a host of other objects, using
original Celtic, Roman and Scandinavian jewellery as the
inspiration for his designs.
Everything Ian produces has an
official Edinburgh assay mark, which is a castle, and a
British assay mark, which is a lion rampant. The date of each
piece is represented by a letter, which makes it an ideal gift
to commemorate a special event. Ian can even engrave a name or
date if required and he accepts commissions. Each item comes
in a presentation box with a leaflet explaining the ancient
assay marks of Scotland and Britain.
