Situated on the lovely island of
South Uist, Hebridean Jewellery fashions and makes
superb gold and silver jewellery inspired by ancient Celtic/Pictish
designs that go back centuries. It was founded by John Hart in
1974, and now his son, also called John, continues the fine
tradition of artistry and craftsmanship that has gained the
company a reputation that goes far beyond the shores of
Scotland.
The
Celtic/Pictish range features superbly made Scottish kilt
pins, thistles and Luckenbooth brooches (brooches
traditionally given by a groom to his bride on their wedding
day but not used until their first son's wedding, when it is
again passed on). There are also chunky wrist and neck torcs
that add that certain something to any fashion ensemble,
necklaces, earrings, bracelets and penanular brooches, which
are circular with long pins that were sometimes used as
weapons in days gone by. There is also a selection of superb
wildlife pieces, such as a silver seal mounted on a
hand-picked pebble from Iochdar beach on South Uist.
There
are also shops in Stornoway on Lewis and at Fort William on
the mainland, both selling the complete range of Hebridean
Jewellery, and catalogues can be ordered through the company's
website at £2 including delivery anywhere in the UK. You can
also order jewellery over a secure connection via the website.
South Uist is one of the most
beautiful islands in the Western Isles, and is full of
dramatic scenery, historical interest and wildlife. No visit
is complete without calling in at the workshops and showroom
of Hebridean Jewellery. Any one of their beautiful,
hand-crafted pieces would make a superb gift, or a souvenir of
your visit to one of the most magical places in Scotland.
