The low doorway at 49 High Street in Old Amersham leads directly into an original timber-framed, Tudor Hall House built over 500 years ago, the home of Amersham Museum. This fascinating museum tells the story of the town of Amersham from early times, with Roman artefacts from the villa at Mantles Green, through to the coming of the railway and the establishment of Amersham on the Hill, WW2 activities and 20th century industries. The new displays on the ground floor of the museum illustrate everyday life in the town from what people wore to the job they did and how they enjoyed their leisure time.

Upstairs there are displays about the traditional local crafts of lacemaking, straw plait for hats, chairmaking and farming. This family friendly museum has interactive exhibits, traditional toys to try out and special bags of things to do for all ages from pre-school children to teens. The garden that runs down to the bank of the River Misbourne, hidden away behind the house, is full of culinary herbs and medicinal plants that our ancestors would have grown. The shop stocks a wide range of photgraphs taken by local photographer George Ward before 1930, books, postcards and toys linked to Amersham and famous visitors including Beatrix Potter.
