The Hell-Fire Caves at West Wycombe offer a
totally unique experience. The Caves are owned by
Sir Edward Dashwood, a direct descendent of Sir Francis Dashwood, who originally excavated
them in the 1750s on the site of an ancient quarry.
Throughout the 1700s and 1800s, the caves, which are quarter of a mile underground, were reputed
to have hosted the Hell-Fire Club whose membership included some of Britain's most
senior aristocrats and statesmen.
Today, the caves are a popular tourist attraction and a wonderful insight into our history.
A tour of the caves includes a long winding passage that leads past various small chambers to
the Banqueting Hall, down over the River Styx to the Inner Temple, which is about 300 feet
beneath the church at the top of the hill. The Caves are scattered with statues in costume and
a commentary with sound effects is included throughout the tour.
For a great family day out, with a little twist, visit the Hell-Fire Caves for a
memorable experience that you are unlikely to forget. Open daily Apr - Oct, Weekends Nov
- Mar, 11am
- 5.30pm.
