Angela and Charles Meads are the joint proprietors of
Apple Court Nursery and Garden, which they
have established as one of the finest in all Hampshire. The formal garden
at Apple Court has been developed since 1988 in the abandoned walled
kitchen garden of Yeatton House, situated in rich farmland between the New
Forest and the Solent.
The garden was designed as a series of interlocking areas,
each intended to create a distinct visual impression and to have a
microclimate best suited to its particular plants. Different interests succeed each
other throughout the year, starting with snowdrops and hellebores,
followed by pulmonarias, roses and peonies. The Hosta Walks come into their
own in April and are followed by the Daylily Garden; this holds
centre stage until the grasses take over through August and into the
winter. Among many other features in this unique spot is a new Japanese garden, complete with tea house and pond.
The nursery was originally the frameyard, where seeds were raised in frames and grown
on before being set out in the garden. The nursery contains a delightful selection of rare
and unusual plants, offering something for the dedicated plantsman as well as the amateur
gardener. Of particular interest are some magnolia relatives growing against the south-facing walls and
a number of new and rare grasses, sedges, ferns and hostas. The nursery reflects the
owners' chief interests _ hostas, daylilies, ferns, grasses, scented plants and plants coloured black
or purple. Specimens of many of the plants they offer in the nursery shop can be seen growing
in the steadily maturing garden.
Opening times are 10am to 5pm Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays
March to end October. The garden, but not the nursery, is suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. Dogs
are not admitted. The owners are happy to greet all guests, including photographers and
artists. Group parties from flower clubs and horticultural societies are always welcome, and
other visiting times can be arranged with notice.
A two-bedroom cottage attached to the main house provides a delightful base for a
self-catering break in beautiful, tranquil surroundings.
