Everyone visiting the historic city of
Winchester should take time to look in at the
Clock-Work-Shop, which occupies two floors of an
old building in a side street just off the main
street. Owned by Peter Ponsford-Jones and run by
him and his partners Kevin Hurd and Richard
Scorey, the shop specialises in the sale, purchase, repair, restoration,
after care and valuation of antique clocks, mostly English and
mostly from the period from the 17th century to the First World
War. Around 100 clocks are usually on display, including
carriage clocks, wall clocks, mantel clocks and long case clocks, and
the shop also deals in fine antique barometers and has a small
stock of pocket watches.
The shop hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, when
all the clocks are available to view, but customers can `visit' the
shop at any time of the day or night by accessing the splendid
website, which includes comprehensive details, including photographs
and prices, of the full stock. A typical entry from the long case
clock catalogue: `A very handsome 8 day longcase of super quality.
The silvered dial is particularly beautiful - a real work of the
engraver's art! The oak case has excellent colour, finish and proportions.
A most original clock. Circa 1780. Local delivery and set-up.'
With notes as interesting and tempting as these, a browse through the website could easily result in
a real-life visit to the shop. All sales and repairs carry a three-year guarantee.
