On the banks of the Beaulieu River, in the heart of the
New Forest, you will find the picturesque village of Buckler's
Hard. With a beautiful setting, riverside walk and river cruises
to enjoy, Buckler's Hard is one of the most attractive and
unusual villages in England. Yet there is also much to see and do in
this unique village where time has almost stood still since the
days when wooden ships were built here for Nelson's fleet.
The Buckler's Hard Story reflects the history of the
village, from its origins as a port for importing sugar cane from
the West Indies, through its shipbuilding history covering
the construction of more than 50 naval and merchant vessels
that were built here. Displays include models of the ships that
were built for Lord Nelson, featuring his favourite,
HMS Agamemnon, and other items of memorabilia. Historic cottage displays portray life at
Buckler's Hard in 1793 and residents of the
time gossip about local matters in the re-constructed
Village Inn. Recent history of the village is portrayed through the river's role in the D-Day
landings during World War II.
At the bottom of the Village street take a cruise on the tranquil Beaulieu River in
Swiftsure which runs between April and October. A lively commentary bringing the history of the
Beaulieu River to life and some magnificent scenery makes for a lively and memorable trip, not to
be missed. The delightful Riverside Walk takes you through woodland to the village of Beaulieu.
Refreshment opportunities are available both at the Captain's Cabin Cafeteria, near the
main entrance, and at the Master Builder's House Hotel. A wide range of gifts is available at the
gift shop and there is even a Village Store.
