Roy and Suzanne keep the welcome mat out for
visitors to the Barleycorn Inn, a smartly kept village pub just
off the A338 south of Burbage. Behind the
substantial brick frontage, the 200-year-old inn has an
appealing traditional look, with beams and a handsome
brick inglenook fireplace. In fine weather, tables are set
out under parasols in the lawned garden. Five real ales
are always on tap, with many other draught and
bottle beers, cider, wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks,
and wide-ranging menus provide plenty of choice
for patrons. Always in demand are the steaks, which
cater for all appetites, from 8oz rump, sirloin, rib-eye
and fillet to a daunting 480z T-Bone. They can be
served plain or with a choice of very tasty sauces.
Other dishes _ the choice changes daily _ might include super fish cakes, deep-fried Camembert with
a sweet chilli sauce, sizzling chicken, mini-roast pork loin and chargrilled
salmon with ginger, spring onion and cashew nuts. There are always plenty of
vegetarian options and some hard-to-resist desserts such as apple pie or lemon
meringue ice cream cake, and for those with less time to spare the ploughman's
platters and the filled jacket potatoes are tasty alternatives.
Plans for 2007 include the
bringing on stream of six bedrooms for Bed & Breakfast guests.
