Craftsmanship of the highest order can be seen
in the windows and display cases of David Smith
Jewellery, which was opened by the eponymous owner in 2002. He started in the business in
1982 and traded elsewhere in Lewes from 1997 until moving to this 18th century listed building in
the High Street.
In the workshop on the premises David and his assistant Alexis design and make a range
of jewellery, some for stock, some to supply other shops and some to carry out
individual commissions. They work in platinum, silver and
the various colours of gold, and many of the pieces
are set with either diamonds or the increasingly
popular, high-quality freshwater pearls.
The range includes engagement and wedding rings, bangles and bracelets,
brooches, earrings, necklaces and tiaras, and besides their own creations they also stock jewellery
made by a variety of independent craftsmen. Tiaras can be hired as well as bought, and the
shop offers a bespoke repair and alteration service. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm Monday
to Saturday. In August 2004 a second David Smith shop opened in Haywards Heath, at 128
South Road.
