The De La Warr Pavilion, opened in 1935, is one of
the most significant modernist buildings in England. It
was commissioned at the instigation of Earl de la
Warr, Mayor of Bexhill 1932-34, as a people's palace by
the sea. The competition for the design of the building
was won by the architects Erich Mendelsohn and
Serge Chermayeff. The Pavilion is pioneering in construction, form and spirit. The
exhibitions programme explores a range of responses to modernism by artists, architects and
designers. Open all year.
