The town of Cranbrook, the `Capital of the
Kentish Weald', has much to offer the visitor, including some fine old
buildings, a museum, the parish church of St Dunstan and the tallest smock mill
in England. But for anyone looking for a well-deserved treat, something to
enhance the home or a present for someone special, The Craft Shop
comes top of the list. Madeline Hazelden changed course from teaching art to
starting her own business selling exclusively British crafts. Behind the tiny
frontage of a 17th century cottage, the shop is a veritable Aladdin's Cave of
colour, texture and design.
Amongst the treasures are ceramic sculptures
by Elaine Peto, Marie Prett and Linda Warrick, studio glass by Peter Layton,
Norman Stuart Clarke, Tim Casey and many others. Stainless steel sculpture by
Jim Milborrow contrasts with luxuriant textiles and jewellery by various
talented artists. There are paintings by Charles Newington and Cliff Howe, wood
engravings by Sue Scullard, etchings by Frances Shearing and Sally Winter and
lino prints by Neil Ashton. The Craft Shop invites you to join the many
customers who love to browse surrounded by the work of talented British crafts
people.
