Situated in the heart of Kent's county town and within
walking distance of the museum and other attractions,
Cornfield Miniatures has developed from a hobby. Josie Turner, who
owns and runs the shop and the Lullaby Lane Baby Shop,
originally collected full-size teapots. It was lack of space at home that
led her to collecting miniature versions instead. The Doll's House
Shop opened in 1996, and Josie acquired it in the following year,
and she has built up a truly amazing collection of doll's houses in
all shapes and sizes, colours and prices. They range from single-storey cottages and bungalows
to three-storey Georgian mansions, half-timbered Tudor houses and even the occasional château,
as well as garden sheds, summer houses and greenhouses.
Much of the stock is made by British manufacturers, with houses, shops and room boxes
by Anglesey, Sid Cooke, Toy Workshop, Dolls House Emporium and Jim Cutler's Exclusive
Georgian Houses. When someone buys a miniature house they will obviously need miniature accessories
to fill it, and Josie stocks a complete range of furniture, working electric lighting, carpets
and wallpaper - everything right down to the silverware, china, glass and DIY items. Apart from
the doll's houses, the shops sell a wide selection of other goods, many locally made, including
prams, buggies, baby gifts and christening gowns.
