Doddington Place was built in 1860 for Sir John Croft
of the port and sherry family. It is now the home of
the Oldfield family. Surrounded by wooded
countryside, orchards and farmland, it is in an officially
designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The
lovely landscaped ten-acre gardens are recognised by
English Heritage as being of special historical interest.
The gardens include a notable woodland garden established
in the 1960s which is spectacular in May and June.
It includes many different kinds of rhododendron
and azalea, camellias, acers and eucryphia. A large
rock garden laid out c.1910 retains a strong
Edwardian atmosphere, where the plants include
sedum, sempervivens, Helianthemum, dianthus,
naturalised cyclamen and irises. A formal sunk garden with borders
- at their best in late summer and a spring garden with fruit trees under planted with bulbs.
There is also a fine avenue of Wellingtonia dating from the mid-19th century and a
recently completed two storey brick and flint gothic folly. Extensive lawns are framed by
impressive clipped yew hedges and many fine specimen trees. The avenues provide several fine
walks including Woodland Garden, Pond and Folly Walks.
