There can be few gentler, more relaxed ways of spending
a summer afternoon than a horse-drawn boat trip with
the Godalming Packet Boat Company. Jenny Roberts, who runs
the company with her daughter Lynne, bought the narrow boat
Iona in 1986 and started the trips, thus keeping alive the tradition
of horse-drawn boating. The two-hour round trip (usually starting
at 2pm) begins and ends at Godalming Wharf on the National
Trust owned River Wey Navigation, passing through a lock on the
way. Iona, a full-length narrow boat, was built in 1935 by Harland
& Wolfe for service with the Grand Union Canal Carrying
Company. She did duty in several places and appeared on TV and in
films before taking up her current job. She retains
her traditional colourful painting and has seats for
up to 48 passengers and a tea bar.
Iona is drawn by one of two splendid heavy horses the piebald mare Rosie, who used
to appear in coloured horse classes at shows, or
the blue roan gelding Ben, who started his working
life pulling a trap in Brentwood. Iona can be
chartered for a birthday outing, a corporate event or
any other special occasion. Cream teas are available
by arrangement.
