Ballard's Brewery was set up in 1980 by Mike Brown in an old cowhouse on a Sussex farm. It later moved to Elsted Marsh and in 1988 was taken over by Carola Brown in new premises here in Nyewood. Head Brewer Francis Weston, with Ballard's almost from the start, heads a team that produces some 1,500 gallons a week, each batch individually brewed using malted barley milled on the premises, whole-flower English hops, yeast and water. The only additive is isinglass finings to `settle' the yeast sediment.

The Ballard's range comprises six regular beers, five seasonal and four bottle-conditioned. In the brewery shop, open from 8am to 4pm (weekends by appointment), they sell the beers, personalised labels for special events and a range of merchandise that includes T-shirts, pewter tankards, pint glasses, key rings, brass buckles and horse brasses. Brewery tours for groups of 12 to 20 can be arranged for weekday evenings, or you can take a virtual tour on the website.
