The red kite is one of this country's most beautiful and
rare birds. At the Gingrin Farm Red Kite Feeding
Station you can see them feeding, and wonder at their amazing grace
and manoeuvrability. It was founded in 1993, and is now
owned and managed by Lena Powell and son Chris. Red kites
were roosting at the farm in winter, and were being fed as
and when founder Eithel Powell was able.
At that time around a dozen birds visited the farm,
and this rose over the years until now over 400 can be seen
in winter. In conjunction with the Welsh Kite Trust, Gigrin
Farm now also serves as the rehabilitation centre for red kites.
Feeding takes place at 2pm in winter and 3pm in summer, and it is one of the best places to see these magnificent birds swoop down and
take the meat in their talons before rising again. So skilful are they at flying they will even eat
the meat while flying! Anything up to ¼ tonne of prime meat (which is actually fit for
human consumption) is bought in per week, depending on the number of kites visiting. The birds
here are all native to Wales, and tests have shown that they are all descended from one female!
There are five hides available and a new area, which allows you to see the kites from
above, has been introduced. There is also a nature trail to be explored. There is plenty of car
parking space, a shop, a campsite and an interpretation centre.
