Charlotte's tea-house has
a superb position on the first floor of the grand old Coinage
Hall in the centre of the city. The Hall has a history that
goes back to the early 1300s but the present building, which
has Grade II listed status, was erected in imposing neo-Gothic
style in 1848. It has recently been lovingly restored and now
provides a peaceful sanctuary away from the busy streets of
the city.
Owners
Joan and Mike Pollard have maintained the Victorian ambience
of this elegant tearoom with crystal chandeliers, period
furniture, waitresses in charming period costume and home-made
cakes served on silver-plated cake stands. Teatime treats here
include cream teas, Charlotte's speciality high teas, an
inviting array of wonderful cakes and a large selection of
teas and herbal infusions. No wonder Charlotte's has won the
annual Award of Excellence from the Tea Guild every year since
2002. The menu also offers a good choice of light
lunches such as potato toasties, omelettes and salads.
Charlotte's is open from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, all
year.
