When Anne Voss-Bark bought The Arundell
Arms in 1961 she had little experience in the hotel trade and even less of fishing.
An established fishing inn, The Arundell Arms 45 years ago was not the luxurious place it
is today. There was just one private bathroom for the 17 guest rooms, a
temperamental boiler, no hotel bar and the police
station, complete with cells, stood on the other
side of the car park. How times have changed! Anne, a winner of the Woman Hotelier of
the Year Award and a fly fisher of high renown, has turned the inn into one of the best
hotels in the West Country, known throughout England for the superb fishing along
the stretches of river that it owns. Further recognition came with the hotel's
César Award for "Sporting Hotel of the
Year 2006".
Built on a site that dates back to Saxon times, the hotel was once a coaching inn
on the main route from London through the West Country to Penzance. It has
been renovated and refurbished over the years but great care has been taken to ensure that
the traditional atmosphere of a country house is preserved, whilst the standard
of accommodation throughout is sumptuous. The cosy and intimate lounge is ideal
for relaxing and there's also a popular bar. The bedrooms, all with private bathrooms,
are perfect with everything provided to ensure that guests enjoy a peaceful night's
sleep. Many of the 21 bedrooms have been recently completely _ and attractively _ refurbished to designs by Anne Voss-Bark and interior
designer Roz Clarke.
The elegant dining room is the perfect setting for some of the best food the West
Country has to offer. Led by Head Chef Steven Pidgeon, the team conjures up a fabulous dinner
menu each evening. Wherever possible, the meat, fish, cheese and vegetables are all sourced
locally and, naturally, the seasonal availability of
produce is reflected in the menus.
The superb hospitality undoubtedly draws people to The Arundell Arms time and time
again, but it is the sports, particularly the fishing, that have made it such a
favourite. Salmon, sea
trout and brown trout abound in the hotel's 20 miles of rivers, managed by the hotel's river
keeper and instructor, Roy Buckingham. Other activities such as horse riding and shooting can also
be arranged and, of course, there is always the beauty of the surrounding countryside to explore.
