The Devil's Stone Inn
Shebbear, Devon EX21 5RV
Tel: 01409 281210
The attractive village of Shebbear is set around a spacious square with its church
at one end and The Devil's Stone Inn at the other. Nearby, beneath an ancient oak tree
is the huge boulder, weighing about a ton, from which the inn takes its name. According to
one legend, it was dropped by the Devil while descending from heaven to hell.
Every November 5th, the bell-ringers of the
village
`fire' all the church bells and then turn
the Stone over with crowbars "to keep the
Devil away for another year".
A board in Stephen and Christine Hurst's delightful 16th century inn tells the full
story; another certifies that the inn has qualified
as one of the 12 most haunted pubs in Britain. It must also rate as one of the most lively,
with pool, darts and skittles available, and the local football and cricket teams making the inn
their base. There are real ales on tap and a good choice of wholesome and appetising fare. The
inn also has eight comfortable guest bedrooms, all recently refurbished, all en suite and all
equipped with colour TV.
