Located in a delightful and secluded cobbled courtyard off Market Street, Hatherleigh Pottery is owned and run by Jane Payne who has been a keen potter for more than 40 years. After retiring from teaching, she took a four-year course in ceramics and subsequently bought the pottery. Jane specialises in hand-thrown, practical domestic stoneware _ jugs, mugs, bowls, dishes and the like. Much of her work is sgraffito decorated and her use of a wide range of glazes brings colour and variety to her wares. All Jane's pottery is trade-marked with a small fish imprinted near the base.

The light and airy showrooms at the Pottery also feature work by other craftspeople such as Michael Taylor, a local potter who shows mugs, vases and casseroles in a style that makes an interesting contrast with Jane's work. Also on display are Jane Ritchie's ranges of shoulder bags and handbags, all delightfully designed and beautifully made in rich, colourful textiles; and Gill Salway's original prints using a variety of techniques. The Pottery is open from Easter to New Year, Monday to Saturday, from 10am-5pm.
